Nothing says ‘luxury in Mexico” quite like laying on a chaise lounge overlooking the azure blue sea, taking in the sun’s rays with a perfectly shaken margarita in your hand.
That margarita is more than a drink, it’s an experience, taking you to a warm sandy beach with every sip. If you’re already planning on jet-setting to Los Cabos to indulge in an opulent vacation, what better way to spend an evening, or afternoon, than tasting the spirits that encapsulate the region?
Tequila has a long history in North America — it was the first distilled spirit to be produced on the continent, and has been made in Mexico since the early 1500s. Though it is readily available throughout the country, most tequila producers are located in the namesake town of Tequila, in Jalisco State, about 65 kilometers north-west of Guadalajara.
According to legend, the spirit was discovered when a blue agave, the plant from which tequila is made, was struck by lightning before being blessed by the goddess of agave, Mayahuel.
As coveted as the spirit itself, tequila bottles have become a collector’s item and a sign of prestige among connoisseurs. Bottles are often hand-crafted and can be made of hand-blown glass, crystal, ceramic, or in the case of the $3,500,000 Ley .925 Ley Diamant (the most expensive tequila bottle in the world) two kilos of platinum, and 4,100 white diamonds.
Tequila is made from the sap produced by the blue agave plant, which is fermented and distilled for roughly nine years before being used. There are five categories of tequila, each varying by color and age.
Blanco (silver, white) — This is the purest form of the spirit. Un-aged, it will appear clear, and taste of the true, intense flavors of the agave plant.
Joven (gold) — These tequilas are typically a mix, where colorants and flavorings have been added (often with caramel). This is the most common form of tequila used in bars for shots and mixed drinks.Reposado (rested) — This tequila has been aged in oak barrels or a storage tank for anywhere between two and 11 months. The color takes a golden hue, and a woodsy flavor develops.
Añejo (aged) — Tequila earns the title of añejo after aging for at least one year, in barrels with a strict limit of 600 liters. The spirit deepens to an amber hue, becoming smoother and richer in taste.
Extra añejo (extra aged) — This classifications only appeared in 2006, and entails the same details as Añejo Tequila, but has been aged for over three years. It develops a much darker color, with a flavor so rich it must be diluted with distilled water, making it extremely smooth. Keep in mind, tequila is meant to be sipped; if you need a lime and some salt, you should try a different bottle.
With tequila the non-official official drink of Mexico, tasting opportunities are bountiful. For a truly immersive experience, the Tequila & Ceviche Bar at Las Ventanas offers an unparalleled selection of Mexican tequilas, including some of the most expensive the country has to offer. Consult the bar’s “tequila masters,” who will help you determine a tequila to perfectly match your preferences. You can also indulge in a one-on-one blind tasting.
If a craving for tequila strikes while walking the streets of San Jose del Cabo, head to Habanero’s Gastro Grill & Tequila Bar. Not only is the food authentically delicious, but they hold an extensive tequila collection. Their knowledge earned them an expertise award from the Mexican Tequila Regulatory Agency. Just make sure you have driver booked to take you back to your villa. If you’re looking to tour the tequila making process and visit a blue agave field, you’re going to have to head to the mainland to the state of Jalisco. The Jose Cuervo Express train departs weekly from Guadalajara takes you through the town of Tequila, and tours their distillery. Children stay occupied playing games and exploring the trail while those of age enjoy the many samples given along the way.
After a long day of sipping the world’s finest tequila in Los Cabos, make sure you have a villa to sleep off the spirits effects. Visit our website or call 1-800-474-1629 to book your next getaway.
Cinco de Mayo has become a staple holiday for many westerners, but in Mexico, it is only considered a national holiday in the cities of Puebla and Veracruz. But in Los Cabos, whether you want to go out and enjoy the day, or relax by the pool at your luxury villa rental, we have everything you need to know.
Cinco de Mayo, which falls on a Sunday this year, is a holiday in commemoration of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French on May 5th, 1862 (not to be mistaken with Mexican Independence Day, September 16th). It was not until the 1980’s that the holiday became popular in North America largely due to liquor and beer companies using it as a promotional tactic.
It is thought that the holiday’s popularity is high in countries with a prominent Mexican population, as the day is a recognition of the bravery of those who continue to fight against oppression and celebrate their heritage. Despite the misconceptions of the holiday, we promote any excuse to spend time with your family and friends to enjoy and indulge in Mexican culture, foods, and drinks. Parades and music in the streets can be found in Cabo San Lucas and Punta Mita, with many restaurants and bars serving special promotions for the day.
For the past 13 years, the Los Cabos Mexican Grill and Cantina in Cabo San Lucas hosts an annual Cinco de Mayo block party. With outdoor dining, live music, and various entertainment and of course, an abundance of drinks, the event takes place all day long. Take the kids in the early afternoon to experience the festivities and child-friendly activities before returning for some evening fun, and maybe a cocktail or two. To To truly immerse yourself in traditional Mexican cuisine, we suggest Si Señor restaurant in Punta Mita. Located directly on the beach, enjoy the highest quality foods, and margaritas made from freshly squeezed lime juice, with the tequila of your choice. Surround yourself with palm trees under a canopy of traditional tapestries, and check out the gallery of historical sculptures and pottery on your way in.
Prefer to stay in and host your friends and family? Many of our private villas offer amenities including personal concierge and chefs, to make your Cinco de Mayo party run seamlessly. Pick up some decorations and tequila, and let our chefs cook traditional foods like tacos and enchiladas. If you can get your hands on some Ancho Reyes liqueur, hailing from Puebla, add the spicy spirit to your cocktails for a kick your guests will love.No matter how you decide to celebrate Cinco de Mayo—in the privacy of your gorgeous villa or out and about in town—don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the festivities.

For the name alone, we recommend visiting Lovers Beach. The otherworldly rock formations are the perfect landscape, blending seamlessly with an often cloudless blue sky. However, the crowds can be bigger than some of the other beaches in the area. But the views are worth it. Make it a romantic picnic and get lost in your own world.

For luxury vacations overlooking crystal clear waters and stunning skies in Mexico, there are often two standout locations: Los Cabos and Cozumel. The decision can be tough, considering both locations are truly breathtaking, but we think Los Cabos is the better way to go. Of course, this depends on what you’re looking for. For adventure, hiking, ruins, and snorkeling, Cozumel might be your spot. But if you’re looking to indulge in luxury, relax and take in gorgeous sights with top-tier food and drink, we suggest Los Cabos trip.
For one, Los Cabos feels much bigger, with more nooks and crannies to explore. While both locations attract a number of tourists, Cozumel is a stop for many large cruise ships, which flood the streets regularly with crowds that never seem to end, turning an afternoon stroll into a busy center, making it difficult to take in the gorgeous surroundings.
The cruise ship activity in Cozumel has also had a profound effect on the area’s waters. Once a prime snorkeling location, the area’s aquatic life has seen a decline, with once regular visitors saying it is no longer what it used to be. Los Cabos still has an abundance of marine life from turtles to dolphins and whales. Divers are in paradise on Socorro island, which is rich with giant manta rays, whales and a number of sharks.
Being situated on the west coast, Los Cabos is more sheltered from storms, specifically hurricanes. The east coast, however, is much more prone to these disasters, especially between June and October, popular vacation times for both destinations. If you’re looking to stay safe from the weather, we recommend staying on the Pacific Coast.
As far as beaches are concerned, Los Cabos beaches offer more exclusivity. Each beach in the area provides its own unique view and experience, often surrounded by breathtaking rock formations and sunset views. With world-renowned beaches like Lover’s Beach and Medano Beach, home to the famous Arch, you know you can expect only the best experience and views. Beaches in Los Cabos often have fewer vendors and loud sounds, whereas Cozumel beaches are lined with bars and cafes, which is can be fun if it’s your thing.
The range of activities is much greater in Los Cabos, which has the advantage of a variety of landscapes. Mountains, parks, and canyons are abundant which allows for adventure for everyone’s tastes. From ATV trails, horseback rides, hiking as well as beaches, Los Cabos has it all, including the largest marlin fishing tournament in the world and seasonal whale watching.
Dining and nightlife is also significantly different on each end of the country. While both offer authenticity, Los Cabos has its own upscale flare to Mexican foods and drink like immersive farms with restaurants, classes, and spas, including Flora Farms Kitchen and Las Tamarindos. Most restaurants open early and close late, whereas the restaurants in Cozumel tend to only open around 2 pm and close at midnight. Los Cabos is largely recognized for luxurious accommodations, including opulent private villas just steps away from the azure blue waters of the Sea of Cortez. Looking to indulge? Look no further than Elegant Mexico for the perfect villa to take your Los Cabos vacation to the next level.

Whether you’re looking to purchase a piece to take home in honor of your luxurious vacation, gallery hop or step in to take advantage of some air conditioning, it’s no time wasted. Punta Mita may not be the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of big game fishing. However, the locals know that it is one of the best fishing spots in the world. Whether you are a seasoned angler or seeking a new thrill, the fishing opportunities available to tourists in Punta Mita are simply stunning. Here are some of our suggestions for making your Punta Mita Mexico fishing adventure an unforgettable experience.
The variety of fish in the Punta Mita waters is astounding. You can find different species of marlin, tuna, red snapper, mahi mahi, grouper, Jack Crevalle, amber jack and many more. Some stand out trophy species of the area are the Blue Marlin, the Black Marlin, Cubera Snapper, Pacific Sailfish and of course Yellowfin Tuna. The Yellowfin Tuna is by far the most hefty catch you can find in Punta Mita, with specimens edging on 400 pounds. If you’re a serious sportfisher looking for a thrilling hunt, off-shore fishing in Punta Mita is sure to please. If you prefer to stay on shore, don’t worry. Inshore and shore fishing in Punta Mita can wield you smaller species like Almaco Jack, Spanish mackerel, and African pompano.
The peninsula of Punta Mita is surrounded by pristine waters teeming with big game species of fish, making it a sought after destination by international anglers. From September to February, the waters of Punta Mita cool down slightly and this happens to be the best fishing season with the highest catch rates for Striped and Blue Marlin, Snapper, Wahoo, and Tuna. But there is no bad time for fishing in Punta Mita. These waters hold such a beautiful variety of species perfect for eating or mounting that any time of year is sure to please even the most experienced fishermen. Pro tip: If you’re looking for an extreme challenge, book your trip during September and October. This is when the Black Marlin, the fastest fish in the world, is most likely to be caught.
If you are visiting in November, the nearby International Marlin and Sailfish Tournament is a must-do. This huge tournament is open to visitors and locals alike, turning the town of Puerto Vallarta into a vibrant international fiesta where you will meet enthusiasts from all over the globe. Also in November, the Hook the Cure fishing tournament offers an all inclusive experience including golf, spa treatments and unlimited gourmet dining. The fun is all for a good cause, as proceeds go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This event has raised over $5.8 million and attracts some word-class celebrity guests and athletes. Pro tip: These world class tournaments are a great activity for large groups with sponsorship opportunities, so consider Punta Mita fishing for your next corporate event.
An amazing fishing location nearby to Punta Mita is Roca Corbetena. This rock island offers an incredible fishing experience because of the countless species of small bait fish which inhabit the waters. These smaller fish attract the big game fish you’ll be after. True enthusiasts of the sport cannot miss Roca Corbetena. Chartered fishing tours, such as YKnot Fishing and SeaDoos, can bring you there. They will cater to your desires whether you want to spearfish for octopus, snorkel, or just sit back and enjoy the sparkling waters while you watch someone else do the fishing. Many charters are proud to offer signature food and drink experiences on board, like Spearmex which offers an exclusive Patron Experience. Some fishing charters, such as Pesca en Vallarta, even specialize in multi-day trips. While you live aboard in the utmost comfort, the crew will ensure your adventure is like no other. Pro tip: Once you’ve made your choice, be sure to book your chartered fishing experience in advance. While there are many boats and crews to choose from, the best ones rarely have walk-on availability.
If you would like to include some incredible rod-to-plate dining in your fishing expedition after an exciting day at sea, you can relax and enjoy the freshest meal you’ve ever had. After fishing in the waters between your Punta Mita villa and the large resort town of Puerto Vallarta is only a 40 minute boat ride from Punta Mita, you can deboard and explore the culinary delights here. Many shore line restaurants and hotels, both in Punta Mita and Puerto Vallarta, will even grill your catch for you right before your eyes. We recommend Si Senor for an upscale experience or Mita Mary Boat Bistro for an open air picnic, both on the shores of Punta Mita. In Puerto Vallarta, the exceptionally beautiful Le Kliff will serve you your catch as you gaze out from their cliffside dining area. The Puerto Vallarta bay holds largely the same species and abundance of fish, but because the town offers so many activities and tourist amenities, the waters here tend to be more crowded and the catch slightly smaller during peak seasons. Pro tip: To avoid the crowds and get the heartiest catch for your meal, we recommend setting sail from Punta Mita and visiting the shores of Puerto Vallarta after. If you’re looking for an ocean adventure with all the stops, Punta Mita is the perfect place. When you’re ready to set sail,

Don’t worry though, — we’ve got a list of them here for you so you can avoid a sea of beach umbrellas and truly enjoy Mexico’s Pacific Ocean.
Hidden Beach on the Marietas Islands is the main feature of our list, easily accessible from the coast of Punta Mita. Just a short boat ride away, the islands are known as Islas Marietas National Park. This important nature reserve and the Hidden Beach have an intriguing history. Let’s dive in!
Because these islands have never been inhabited by humans, the Mexican government began using them for military tests in the early 1900’s. However, after Jaques Cousteau, the father of modern marine conservation, noticed the rare flora and fauna on this island a campaign was started to end the destructive testing. The intensely beautiful ecosystem was declared as a wildlife reserve.
The Islands themselves are a marvel of nature and you should be sure to visit here for some snorkeling. The coral reefs that live on the volcanic rock formations underwater host a wealth of marine life, and you can spot sea turtles, eels and dolphins in the nearby waters almost year round. If you’re visiting from December to March, you’ll see humpback whales!
But the true gem of these islands is known as the Hidden Beach. Also known as the Playa Del Amor or Lover’s Beach, this sandy shoreline hides from outside view. It is said to have been formed by an explosion, but no one can know for sure.
Either way, this magnificent beach is one of the most unusual beauties in the world and it’s only accessible by a small watery tunnel leading from the ocean. No boats are allowed, so you’ll have to swim through. But don’t worry, this special swim has a few feet of air above your head and it’s all part of the adventure! Once you’ve crossed under, you’ll find yourself in paradise. The sands are soft and the waters are crystal clear.
The only way to get to the Hidden Beach is by a chartered, licensed boat ride. If you’re staying in Punta Mita, you’ll be at the best point to set sail for the Hidden Beach. The islands are also accessible from Puerto Vallarta, but the boat trip is much longer.
People usually taxi up to Punta Mita to catch a boat. This scenic ride is about 30 minutes and you’ll probably get to see mantas and dolphins on the way. Once you’ve arrived your tour guides will get your ready for an amazing dip in the water.
Because the Hidden Beach has become such a desirable place to visit for many travellers, the Mexican government has been restricting access since 2016. This measure was taken to preserve the flora and fauna of the island and to prevent erosion of the coral reefs below. What this means for people wanting to visit is that you must book in advance and with a reputable company to ensure your trip to the Hidden Beach is possible.
Each day, only 116 people are allowed to visit the beach and only tour boats with permits can visit the waters surrounding the Islands. Smaller boats can get much closer than big ones, so you’ll want a private or small group boat. When you’re choosing a tour company, it’s important to know that not all tours go to the Hidden Beach. Many charters offer two seperate tours, trips for the Marietas Islands exclusively and trips that also go to the Hidden Beach. Always double-check and be sure to book with a reputable charter.
We recommend booking with Mike’s Charters and Tours or Vallarta Adventures for private eco excursions, hidden beach visits, snorkeling and some onboard pampering.
The Hidden Beach isn’t the only secret beach in the area. In fact, these next beaches may be even more secluded since tours and charters don’t typically have them on their itinerary. All these beaches are less than an hour drive from some great vacation hubs, and they’re perfect for a quiet day in the sun. We’ve listed our favourites to get you started:
The first stop on our virtual tour is the Patzcuaro and Patzcuarito beaches. These beaches are very close to each other, and offer almost total isolation.
You can access Patzcuaro by car and then a short walk. From there, you can easily get to Patzcuarito on foot by following a short creek. You’ll be on the edge of the jungle when you visit these beaches, and chances are you won’t see many other people at all.
It’s a lovely place to find seashells and sunbathe, though the swimming can be a bit challenging. Bring a boogie board with you if you plan to do more than wade in the water.<
How to get there: A 20 minute ride from your Punta Mita villa, North East on the Carr. Federal la Cruz de Huanacaxtle.
Playa Carricitos This is one secret beach that makes you work for it.
To get here, you’ll need to embark on a 40 minute hike through the jungle. This is not a difficult trek and you’ll see the glory of the Mexican sun shining through the jungle trees onto the brightly lit path on the way. Once there, you just might be in complete isolation.
Many people are deterred by the idea of a walk to the beach, but we assure you, the reward is worth it. The swimming here is not for beginners, so kids would be safer wading just off the shore. For body surfers, however, this is your perfect playground!
How to get there:A 34 minute ride from Punta Mita, take the highway to Sayulita then drive up Av Revolucion. Park your car and begin your walk through paradise.
Playa de Los Muertos gets its unique name from a nearby cemetery, but these golden shores are anything but spooky.
The beach is more popular with local Mexican families, so while you might not be in total isolation, you won’t see many tourists. There are nice big rocks that protect this area from waves, so the water is serene.
Even on busy days, some stretches of this beach are practically empty, making this a great place to snap exclusive pictures and relax in uninterrupted bliss. It’s very close to Playa Carricitos, so you could hit up two secluded beaches in one day.
How to get there: A 34 minute ride from Elegant Mexico’s Punta Mita villas, take the highway to Sayulita then drive up Av Revolucion.
This beach is a hidden oasis. It’s protected as a nature sanctuary because of the many different kinds of marine life that live in the calm waters.
This makes it an ideal location for snorkeling. It’s also perfect for swimming and sunbathing. It’s not going to be empty, but Since Bahia Santa Maria is one of the less visited beaches in the Cabo area, you may only see a handful of other beachgoers spread out across the length of the shore.
How to get there: Drive for 15 minutes along the Transpeninsular Highway from your Elegant Mexico Los Cabos villa.
Playa Las ViudasLas Viudas has a nice scenic landscape that will definitely make you want to spend the day there. There are volcanic rock formations that make coves and secluded corners so even if there are a few people there, you won’t notice them. This beach is a great place for a sunny picnic or a swim, and you’ll get some photos against the unique backdrop.
How to get there: From your Elegant Mexico Los Cabos villa, drive for 15 minutes along the Transpeninsular Highway.
Despite the name, Las Palmas Public Beach is actually one of the more secluded beaches in the area. This long stretch of white sand and gentle rolling waves is a great place to soak up the sun or go for a dip.
Be sure to bring a picnic with you, because there are no vendors or restaurants in the immediate area. But that means you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for — an escape from the crowds.
How to get there: Head down Av. Coba and then drive up the shore.
This beach, aptly named, is located within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Mexico’s treasures and is home to a precious variety of flora and fauna.
There are many amazing beaches and sights to see, but the Secret Beach is your go-to if you’re looking to have the sun all to yourself. This gorgeous shore is completely untouched by development and tourism, and the waters are calm and crystal clear.
Be sure to bring your snacks and drinks with you and brush up on your Spanish. There are no vendors here and if you happen to meet anyone here, they’ll be a local.
How to get there: Take the Av. Coba/QROO 15 down to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere and continue along the water for 35 minutes.
This nameless beach is referred to by the small restaurant which sits on it, the El Ultimo Maya Restaurant.
To access this beach, you can simply enjoy some fresh ceviche and ribs at the quaint cantina before heading off to wade in the water. While this beach isn’t exactly secret, it’s very quiet and there are usually less than a handful of visitors at any given time. El Ultimo Maya is a great spot to get the secret beach feel with a few amenities like beach chairs and cerveza at your disposal.
How to get there: Take the Av. Coba/QROO 15 down to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere and continue along the water for 30 minutes.

The Sabor a Cabo Festival is the region’s largest culinary festival. It was started in 2005 by a group of local chefs who wanted the celebrate the unique restaurant scene found in Los Cabos. They also wanted to support and give back to their communities by committing contributions to local social initiatives and charities. Since its inauguration, proceeds from ticket sales have gone to the Cuerpo de Bomberos de Cabo San Lucas (volunteer firefighters), the Los Cabos Red Cross and the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. The festival is held every year in late November and early December across many different venues, which rotate from year to year. The festival actually consists of several events, and spans just over a week. The main night that kicks off the festival is called the Sabor a Cabo Magno Event. This night is often held on a luxury golf course or some other stunning seaside site. This is a fun event where you’ll try foods and drinks from over 60 restaurants and 40 wineries. There are mixologists there too, so don’t forget to sip some mezcal and tequila.
You’ll be mingling with friends, foodies, and culinarians while you dig in to some gourmet dishes as the sun sets on the ocean. In addition to amazing food, there’s great entertainment. Past musical guests included Grammy winner Lila Downs, the all-time best-selling Latin American rock band Man¡, and R&B legends Earth, Wind & Fire. You’ll also be treated to live cooking demonstrations with international chefs. Perhaps the most exciting element of the evening, aside from the good eats, is the Chef Con Sabor A Cabo. In this competition, attendees will be able to vote in various categories such as best red wine, best sweet dish, and others. In another exciting competition, 10 spots are available for restaurants to enter with an international chef they have invited. In this live cooking competition, they must prepare a gourmet dish to blow all the others out of the water. The action is shown on big screens so you can watch the meticulous detail and care each chef puts into their craft. The dishes will then be judged by the Sabor a Cabo by American Express Committee. Only one can win the prize!
The big night doesn’t put an end to the festival, however. Next comes the Sabor a Cabo Gastronomic Week, where participating restaurants all over Cabo prepare exclusive meals and dining experiences for festival attendees. Over 60 restaurants participate, so this is your chance to try the best of what Los Cabos has to offer. There are also smaller events happening all around town. These aren’t the same every year, so be sure to check the program, but in the past we’ve seen some really cool mini-festivals. Attendees loved Oktoberfest and Los Cabos BeerFest! The most popular of all mini-fests is the Cabo a Sabor Rural Festival, usually held at the end of the Gastronomic week. Its attendees travel to a nearby rural area to get a real taste of traditional Mexican cooking. Participating restaurants, usually around 20, prepare dishes made with organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and other locally sourced ingredients. To make it even more authentic, restaurants must produce their own eggs and honey for the dishes they make. This amazing farm-to-table event will show you just how mouthwatering farm to table cuisine can be. Ready to go? You can get tickets at the Cabo A Sabor website. Seats start at $325 USD and proceeds go to charity so you’ll be enjoying gourmet Mexican cuisine while supporting local initiatives.
The small town of Miraflores is mostly known as the main organic farming community in the Los Cabos area. The best restaurants get their produce from here, so what better than a food festival right at the source? They also celebrate pitahayas, the favourite local fruit of the Miraflores indigenous community. This young festival usually happens in April. The focus here is traditional cuisine and organic farming. It’s small and less glitzy than some of the bigger festivals, but that’s exactly why it’s so charming. This colorful festival offers an authentic experience that will stay in your heart long after you leave. You can get tickets and more information here.
This festival is the second largest in Los Cabos. Since 2012, the event has been held in the town of Todos Santos, which holds the title of Pueblo Magico (Magic Village). This moniker was given to around 100 small and overlooked towns across Mexico by the Tourism Board to let tourists know where something really special can be found. There are colorful flags, hidden artisanal shops and quaint cobblestone roads that give Todos Santos a magical feel. It’s the perfect place for a food festival. This weekend-long event was created by the owner of a local wine and olive oil shop. Indulge in local wines, imported cheese, and authentic Mexican dishes. The main event happens in the town square on Sunday, where guests can enjoy live music and a silent auction to benefit local programs for children. Visit the Gastrovino Baja Food & Wine Festival site for tickets and more information about this exciting program.
You won’t run out of things to try at any of these festivals, but we’ve got a few suggestions for mouthwatering meals you should keep an eye out for. You simply can’t leave before trying these dishes. And while you’re checking out the different tables and chefs at the festivals, make sure to sample what these top 10 restaurants in Los Cabos have to offer.
