Cinco de Mayo has become a staple holiday for many westerners, but in Mexico, it is only considered a national holiday in the cities of Puebla and Veracruz. But in Los Cabos, whether you want to go out and enjoy the day, or relax by the pool at your luxury villa rental, we have everything you need to know.

Cinco de Mayo, which falls on a Sunday this year, is a holiday in commemoration of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French on May 5th, 1862 (not to be mistaken with Mexican Independence Day, September 16th). It was not until the 1980’s that the holiday became popular in North America largely due to liquor and beer companies using it as a promotional tactic.

It is thought that the holiday’s popularity is high in countries with a prominent Mexican population, as the day is a recognition of the bravery of those who continue to fight against oppression and celebrate their heritage. Despite the misconceptions of the holiday, we promote any excuse to spend time with your family and friends to enjoy and indulge in Mexican culture, foods, and drinks. Parades and music in the streets can be found in Cabo San Lucas and Punta Mita, with many restaurants and bars serving special promotions for the day.

For the past 13 years, the Los Cabos Mexican Grill and Cantina in Cabo San Lucas hosts an annual Cinco de Mayo block party. With outdoor dining, live music, and various entertainment and of course, an abundance of drinks, the event takes place all day long. Take the kids in the early afternoon to experience the festivities and child-friendly activities before returning for some evening fun, and maybe a cocktail or two. To To truly immerse yourself in traditional Mexican cuisine, we suggest Si Señor restaurant in Punta Mita. Located directly on the beach, enjoy the highest quality foods, and margaritas made from freshly squeezed lime juice, with the tequila of your choice. Surround yourself with palm trees under a canopy of traditional tapestries, and check out the gallery of historical sculptures and pottery on your way in.

Pick up some decorations and tequila, and let our chefs cook traditional foods like tacos and enchiladas. If you can get your hands on some Ancho Reyes liqueur, hailing from Puebla, add the spicy spirit to your cocktails for a kick your guests will love.No matter how you decide to celebrate Cinco de Mayo—in the privacy of your gorgeous villa or out and about in town—don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the festivities.
