Why you should visit the Baja California region in 2019
Many luxury travelers are turning a blind eye to the Caribbean and setting their sites on a new destination – the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. This region is undeniably unique and offers visitors a blend of adventure and tranquility. So today, we’re going to discuss why this region is the new vacation hotspot in 2019!
Rich History
For thousands of years, various indigenous tribes inhabited the Baja California Peninsula until it was colonized by Spanish explorers in the late 17th century. For the next 100 years, the conquerors established the city of La Paz, which served as a trading post between the Philippines and the Spanish territories in North and South America.
Fast-forward to the early 20th century, when the region played a crucial role in the Mexican Revolution. In 1911, revolutionary forces in the region launched a rebellion against dictator Porfirio Díaz and captured the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali. For the next decade, the region fought until it aligned with a new president in Mexico City. Baja California officially became Mexico’s 29th province and joined the constitution in 1959.
Beautiful Beaches
As the name suggests, the Baja California Peninsula is surrounded by the sea, and the beaches are absolutely stunning. It’s one of the main reasons that cities like Los Cabos, La Paz, and Ensenada have become popular tourist destinations. The peninsula in nearly 800 miles long, and there are hundreds of hidden beaches that line the coast. We recommend taking the time to rent a car and exploring the region’s stunning landscape on your own, check out this article in The Guardian for some great inspiration. If you’re staying near Los Cabos, don’t hesitate to book a boat tour to discover the Arch of Cabo San Lucas, one of the area’s most iconic landmarks.
Desert Mountains
The landscape of the Baja California Peninsula is truly unique compared to the Mexican mainland. There are numerous desert mountain ranges that spark a sense of adventure in many travelers. For example, the Sierra de la Laguna range at the very tip of the peninsula serves as an idyllic backdrop to the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. There are several hiking trails that dot this mountain range, and many explorers revel at the exotic flora and fauna that inhabit this region. According to several reports, there are numerous “microclimates” within the Sierra de la Laguna range that differ from the dry, desert climate below. The best time to hike is between the months of November and June during the dry season. But be careful, temperatures can drop below freezing during this time – even in Mexico!
Vibrant Culture
The culture of the Baja California Peninsula is rich and vibrant, and it actually differs from the rest of Mexico! Most urban areas boast numerous churches, signaling a bygone era when Catholicism had a strong presence. You’ll also notice the locals speak Spanish with a slightly different accent, as many scholars suspect there’s an English influence from the region’s proximity to the US border (especially around the Tijuana area).
In terms of cuisine, there’s a heavy seafood theme present, so you’ll often find lobster and shrimp on the menu. Although, a trip to this region is not complete without sampling the local fish tacos, which are both legendary and divine! Make sure to get pico de gallo with this delectable dish for a truly authentic experience.
Unique Wildlife
Another reason why tourists love to visit the Baja California Peninsula is due to the fact there’s an abundance of marine animals. For example, humpback whales migrate to the Sea of Cortez to mate and give birth from November through April. These gentle giants often spend the entire winter in these waters, and it provides tourists with the chance to see the beautiful mammals up close!During this same period, visitors can also witness adult sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs in the soft sand. A few weeks later (if you’re lucky), you’ll witness a magnificent phenomenon where thousands of baby sea turtles suddenly hatch and scurry to the warm waters for safety.
There are a number of great reasons to visit the Baja California Peninsula this year. Whether you’re interested in culture, adventure or relaxation, there’s something for everyone! If you’re thinking about booking your next luxury vacation to the Los Cabos area, opt to stay in one of Elegant Mexico’s villas in the exclusive Palmilla community. Why the Sea Of Cortez is the Best Place to Scuba Dive and Snorkel
The warm waters of Mexico’s Pacific coast are home to a wide range of marine life, from tropical fish to bottlenose dolphins. If we look specifically at the Sea of Cortez – also known as the Gulf of California – it sits at the crossroads between the California and Equatorial currents, creating a rich environment that’s ideal for the aquatic explorer.
Whale Migration
During the autumn months, a spectacular phenomenon unfolds in the Sea of Cortez. Thousands of blue, grey, and humpback whales migrate from the cold Alaskan waters to the tropical azure waters of Mexico.
They make the 6,000-mile journey to the area to reproduce and mate, as the Sea of Cortez serves as a safe sanctuary for these gentle giants. For marine biology enthusiasts, it’s a great opportunity to see these majestic animals up close and personal. Though it’s prohibited to physically touch the whales, many adventurers love to snorkel alongside these massive creatures.
Tropical Oasis
Los Cabos sits at the end of the Baja California peninsula at the mouth of the Sea of Cortez. Due to its optimal location, the waters host nearly 900 species of tropical fish including striped marlin, dorado, and yellowfin tuna, which attract professional fishermen from around the globe.
But if you’re not in the mood to catch a fish, you can always explore the marine life by grabbing your snorkeling gear and heading to Chileno Beach. At this location, you’ll discover a sprawling coral reef that hosts giant manta rays, moray eels, sea turtles, and several species of sharks.
This includes the largest species in the world called the whale shark, which can grow to up to 40 feet and weigh up to 28,000 lbs. These animals are not carnivorous and feed only on plankton, krill, and fish eggs, which means you can swim alongside these giants.
There are also thousands of different types of coral, living organisms that feed off of plankton and other tiny sea creatures. The coral comes in a range of different shapes, sizes, and colors so make sure to bring your underwater camera. For the best visibility in the water, we recommend visiting Los Cabos from June to October.
Rugged Landscapes
If you’re seeking an adventure, head to the sand falls, a series of underwater crevasses and ravines that run parallel to the rocky shore. Sounds scary right? Well, the ravines are about 80 feet deep and it’s a great place to scuba dive and explore the marine creatures that live beneath the surface!
Divers often report seeing hammerhead sharks and lionfish during the descent down to the dark depths, but these animals rarely injure humans. This trek should only be undertaken by seasoned scuba divers, as the strong current can cause disorientation in a novice diver.
On the rocky shoreline, you’ll find one of the largest colonies of sea lions in the region. While it’s advised not to get too close to these large mammals, it’s still fascinating to watch them sunbathe from a leisurely distance. The beach is also home to brown pelicans and fisher eagles, which often fish and hunt right before your eyes
If you’re thinking about a scuba diving or snorkeling adventure in the Sea of Cortez, don’t stay in your typical hotel or resort. Opt to stay in a gorgeous luxury villa courtesy of Elegant Mexico! All of our properties are near Los Cabos and are the first choice for glamorous celebrities and wealthy business tycoons.

Sampling Tequila in Los Cabos
Nothing says “luxury in Mexico” quite like laying on a chaise lounge overlooking the azure blue sea, taking in the sun’s rays with a perfectly shaken margarita in your hand. That margarita is more than a drink, it’s an experience, taking you to a warm sandy beach with every sip. If you’re already planning on jet-setting to Los Cabos to indulge in an opulent vacation , what better way to spend an evening, or afternoon, than tasting the spirits that encapsulate the region?
A Taste of History
Tequila has a long history in North America – it was the first distilled spirit to be produced on the continent, and has been made in Mexico since the early 1500s. Though it is readily available throughout the country, most tequila producers are located in the namesake town of Tequila, in Jalisco State, about 65 kilometers north-west of Guadalajara. According to legend, the spirit was discovered when a blue agave, the plant from which tequila is made, was struck by lightning before being blessed by the goddess of agave, Mayahuel. As coveted as the spirit itself, tequila bottles have become a collector’s item and a sign of prestige among connoisseurs. Bottles are often hand-crafted and can be made of hand-blown glass, crystal, ceramic, or in the case of the $3,500,000 Ley .925 Ley Diamant (the most expensive tequila bottle in the world) two kilos of platinum, and 4,100 white diamonds.
Off the Shelf
Tequila is made from the sap produced by the blue agave plant, which is fermented and distilled for roughly nine years before being used. There are five categories of tequila, each varying by color and age. Blanco (silver, white) – This is the purest form of the spirit. Un-aged, it will appear clear, and taste of the true, intense flavors of the agave plant. Joven (gold) – These tequilas are typically a mix, where colorants and flavorings have been added (often with caramel). This is the most common form of tequila used in bars for shots and mixed drinks. Reposado (rested) – This tequila has been aged in oak barrels or a storage tank for anywhere between two and 11 months. The color takes a golden hue, and a woodsy flavor develops. Añejo (aged) – Tequila earns the title of Añejo after aging for at least one year, in barrels with a strict limit of 600 liters. The spirit deepens to an amber hue, becoming smoother and richer in taste. Extra Añejo (extra aged) — This classifications only appeared in 2006, and entails the same details as Añejo Tequila, but has been aged for over three years. It develops a much darker color, with a flavor so rich it must be diluted with distilled water, making it extremely smooth. Keep in mind, tequila is meant to be sipped; if you need a lime and some salt, you should try a different bottle.
Get in the Spirit
With tequila the non-official official drink of Mexico, tasting opportunities are bountiful. For a truly immersive experience, the Tequila & Ceviche Bar at Las Ventanas offers an unparalleled selection of Mexican tequilas, including some of the most expensive the country has to offer. Consult the bar’s “tequila masters” who will help you determine a tequila to perfectly match your preferences. You can also indulge in a one-on-one blind tasting. If a craving for tequila strikes while walking the streets of San Jose del Cabo, head to Habanero’s Gastro Grill & Tequila Bar. Not only is the food authentically delicious, but they hold an extensive tequila collection.
Their knowledge earned them an expertise award from the Mexican Tequila Regulatory Agency. Just make sure you have driver booked to take you back to your villa. If you’re looking to tour the tequila making process and visit a blue agave field, you’re going to have to head to the mainland to the state of Jalisco. The Jose Cuervo Express train departs weekly from Guadalajara takes you through the town of Tequila, and tours their distillery. Children stay occupied playing games and exploring the trail while those of age enjoy the many samples given along the way. After a long day of sipping the world’s finest tequila in Los Cabos, make sure you have a villa to sleep off the spirits effects. Visit our website or call 1-800-474-1629 to book your next getaway.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Los Cabos
Cinco de Mayo has become a staple holiday for many westerners, but in Mexico, it is only considered a national holiday in the cities of Puebla and Veracruz. But in Los Cabos, whether you want to go out and enjoy the day, or relax by the pool at your luxury villa rental, we have everything you need to know.
Cinco de Mayo, which falls on a Sunday this year, is a holiday in commemoration of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French on May 5th, 1862 (not to be mistaken with Mexican Independence Day, September 16th). It was not until the 1980’s that the holiday became popular in North America largely due to liquor and beer companies using it as a promotional tactic.
It is thought that the holiday’s popularity is high in countries with a prominent Mexican population, as the day is a recognition of the bravery of those who continue to fight against oppression and celebrate their heritage. Despite the misconceptions of the holiday, we promote any excuse to spend time with your family and friends to enjoy and indulge in Mexican culture, foods, and drinks. Parades and music in the streets can be found in Cabo San Lucas and Punta Mita, with many restaurants and bars serving special promotions for the day.
For the past 13 years, the Los Cabos Mexican Grill and Cantina in Cabo San Lucas hosts an annual Cinco de Mayo block party. With outdoor dining, live music, and various entertainment and of course, an abundance of drinks, the event takes place all day long. Take the kids in the early afternoon to experience the festivities and child-friendly activities before returning for some evening fun, and maybe a cocktail or two. To To truly immerse yourself in traditional Mexican cuisine, we suggest Si Señor restaurant in Punta Mita. Located directly on the beach, enjoy the highest quality foods, and margaritas made from freshly squeezed lime juice, with the tequila of your choice. Surround yourself with palm trees under a canopy of traditional tapestries, and check out the gallery of historical sculptures and pottery on your way in.
Prefer to stay in and host your friends and family? Many of our private villas offer amenities including personal concierge and chefs, to make your Cinco de Mayo party run seamlessly. Pick up some decorations and tequila, and let our chefs cook traditional foods like tacos and enchiladas. If you can get your hands on some Ancho Reyes liqueur, hailing from Puebla, add the spicy spirit to your cocktails for a kick your guests will love.No matter how you decide to celebrate Cinco de Mayo—in the privacy of your gorgeous villa or out and about in town—don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the festivities.

Why Punta Mita is the Ultimate Fishing Destination
Punta Mita may not be the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of big game fishing. However, the locals know that it is one of the best fishing spots in the world. Whether you are a seasoned angler or seeking a new thrill, the fishing opportunities available to tourists in Punta Mita are simply stunning. Here are some of our suggestions for making your Punta Mita fishing adventure an unforgettable experience.
Which fish to catch?
The variety of fish in the Punta Mita waters is astounding. You can find different species of marlin, tuna, red snapper, mahi mahi, grouper, Jack Crevalle, amber jack and many more. Some stand out trophy species of the area are the Blue Marlin, the Black Marlin, Cubera Snapper, Pacific Sailfish and of course Yellowfin Tuna. The Yellowfin Tuna is by far the most hefty catch you can find in Punta Mita, with specimens edging on 400 pounds. If you’re a serious sportfisher looking for a thrilling hunt, off-shore fishing in Punta Mita is sure to please. If you prefer to stay on shore, don’t worry. Inshore and shore fishing in Punta Mita can wield you smaller species like Almaco Jack, Spanish mackerel, and African pompano.
When to plan your off-shore fishing adventure
The peninsula of Punta Mita is surrounded by pristine waters teeming with big game species of fish, making it a sought after destination by international anglers. From September to February, the waters of Punta Mita cool down slightly and this happens to be the best fishing season with the highest catch rates for Striped and Blue Marlin, Snapper, Wahoo, and Tuna. But there is no bad time for fishing in Punta Mita. These waters hold such a beautiful variety of species perfect for eating or mounting that any time of year is sure to please even the most experienced fishermen. Pro tip: If you’re looking for an extreme challenge, book your trip during September and October. This is when the Black Marlin, the fastest fish in the world, is most likely to be caught.
Fishing tournaments
If you are visiting in November, the nearby International Marlin and Sailfish Tournament is a must-do. This huge tournament is open to visitors and locals alike, turning the town of Puerto Vallarta into a vibrant international fiesta where you will meet enthusiasts from all over the globe. Also in November, the Hook the Cure fishing tournament offers an all inclusive experience including golf, spa treatments and unlimited gourmet dining. The fun is all for a good cause, as proceeds go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This event has raised over $5.8 million and attracts some word-class celebrity guests and athletes. Pro tip: These world class tournaments are a great activity for large groups with sponsorship opportunities, so consider Punta Mita fishing for your next corporate event.
VIP Fishing Experiences
An amazing fishing location nearby to Punta Mita is Roca Corbetena. This rock island offers an incredible fishing experience because of the countless species of small bait fish which inhabit the waters. These smaller fish attract the big game fish you’ll be after. True enthusiasts of the sport cannot miss Roca Corbetena. Chartered fishing tours, such as YKnot Fishing and SeaDoos, can bring you there. They will cater to your desires whether you want to spearfish for octopus, snorkel, or just sit back and enjoy the sparkling waters while you watch someone else do the fishing. Many charters are proud to offer signature food and drink experiences on board, like Spearmex which offers an exclusive Patron Experience. Some fishing charters, such as Pesca en Vallarta, even specialize in multi-day trips. While you live aboard in the utmost comfort, the crew will ensure your adventure is like no other. Pro tip: Once you’ve made your choice, be sure to book your chartered fishing experience in advance. While there are many boats and crews to choose from, the best ones rarely have walk-on availability.
From Amazing Fishing to Sensational Seafood
If you would like to include some incredible rod-to-plate dining in your fishing expedition after an exciting day at sea, you can relax and enjoy the freshest meal you’ve ever had. After fishing in the waters between your Punta Mita villa and the large resort town of Puerto Vallarta is only a 40 minute boat ride from Punta Mita, you can deboard and explore the culinary delights here. Many shore line restaurants and hotels, both in Punta Mita and Puerto Vallarta, will even grill your catch for you right before your eyes. We recommend Si Senor for an upscale experience or Mita Mary Boat Bistro for an open air picnic, both on the shores of Punta Mita. In Puerto Vallarta, the exceptionally beautiful Le Kliff will serve you your catch as you gaze out from their cliffside dining area. The Puerto Vallarta bay holds largely the same species and abundance of fish, but because the town offers so many activities and tourist amenities, the waters here tend to be more crowded and the catch slightly smaller during peak seasons. Pro tip: To avoid the crowds and get the heartiest catch for your meal, we recommend setting sail from Punta Mita and visiting the shores of Puerto Vallarta after. If you’re looking for an ocean adventure with all the stops, Punta Mita is the perfect place. When you’re ready to set sail,

The Most Exclusive Homes in Los Cabos: What You Need to Know
Have you ever wondered how Los Cabos became the premiere spot in Mexico for luxury and glamour? Who put Los Cabos on the map? And why do people love vacationing in these communities? We’ll tell you everything there is to know, from the groundbreaking and historical developments that have occurred in Los Cabos to the amazing lifestyle residents and guests can enjoy in the two original communities that started it all.
The History:
In the early 1950’s, a man named Don Abelardo Rodriguez Jr. came to Baja California Sur. Rodriguez was the son of the interim President of Mexico, General Abelardo Rodriguez, and had wealth and freedom to travel. A few years earlier, in 1948, Abelardo and his wife Lucille Bremer opened a luxury resort in Los Cruces. When he arrived in Los Cabos, meaning The Capes, he found a mostly uninhabited area with some fishing and hunting lodges. Rodriguez recognized the coast’s unique beauty and realized he could make something special there too. In 1957, the husband-and-wife team built the Hotel Palmilla on the undeveloped shore of the Sea of Cortez. It’s known today as the monumental One&Only Palmilla. But back then, it was a small 15-room resort that guests could only access by private plane or yacht. Luckily, that was no problem for the kind of people who frequented the resort. Lucille Bremer was a Hollywood movie star, and usually had the company of her counterparts at the Palmilla. Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, John Wayne and even President Eisenhower were among the guests who stayed at the Palmilla in its early days. Word soon got out and other exclusive resorts and hotels opened in Los Cabos, catering to the glamorous lifestyle of the Hollywood elite. Guests like Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger and Elton John made Los Cabos their private playground in the 60’s and 70’s.
Then, in 1994 two Houston-based friends and business associates were visiting, and like Rodriguez, they saw the potential for something really special on the undeveloped mountainsides close to the Palmilla Hotel. They had come to play at the new Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and couldn’t help but notice the pristine ocean fronts that had gone untouched until then. The two friends were visionaries and successful developers, so they bought a small portion of land on the oceanfront near the Palmilla. They set about developing five houses, all of which sold before completion. They decided to call their project, the first luxury community in Los Cabos, Villas Del Mar. They realized the potential of Villas Del Mar and continued to expand. The community was renowned for excellence in design, quality of life and top-tier management and services. Villas Del Mar set the standard for high-end resort communities. Not long after, Del Mar Development created a second community called Espiritu. But Del Mar Development didn’t stop there. They’ve continued the legacy that Don Abelardo Rodriguez jr. and Lucille Bremer started all those years ago by expanding the mountainside in to six communities, with another in development. The beauty of Los Cabos has been made available to people from all over the world. Thanks to these trailblazers, we can experience the pristine landscapes, the living sea and the warmth of the Mexican sun that is only found in Los Cabos. Let’s dive a little deeper into the way of life in two of the original Los Cabos communities, Villas Del Mar and Espiritu.

Del Mar: The resort homes that started it all
Villas Del Mar is recognized worldwide for setting the bar in luxury resort home design. And it was set high! Its homes are known for their alluring architecture. Some of the older beachfront homes feature a timeless design, while the newer penthouse homes blend contemporary design with traditional Mexican decor. All houses have a unified theme, without any two looking the same. Two decades after Villas Del Mar was founded, it continues to innovate with remodels and new additions. The homes feature an emphasis on outdoor living, the best part of Los Cabos life, with wide windows and glass doors to let the Mexican sun fill the rooms. Pool decks are larger-than-life, and the outdoor dining and lounging areas look out off the mountainside and onto the ocean. There are homes sized to accommodate all kinds of groups, from couples to multi-generational families. Some of the homes even have detached casitas for additional guests.
Espiritu: The most exclusive resort homes in Los Cabos
All of the homes in Espiritu were built by a team of experienced engineers and designers working with Del Mar Development. Del Mar Development had invaluable experience going into this project, having already built the successful Villas Del Mar. At Espiritu, you’ll find homes of extremely high quality with stunning outdoor living spaces. Large pools and decks, lush plant life and BBQ and lounge areas are the norm. Many newer communities in Los Cabos were built quickly and shoddily, attempting to capitalize on the real estate opportunity that the two original communities initiated. But at Espiritu, homeowners know their properties are top-notch. They experience luxury everyday! Espiritu also offers interior design services and has a full service onsite Design Center. Owners can make use of these services, ensuring that their homes are beautiful beyond compare for their own pleasure and for their guests’ as well. Ladco Resort Design, a nationally known Houston design group, provides expert consultation and furnishing. They cater to individual tastes, so no home in Espiritu is the same as another.
