The Los Cabos International Film Festival in Nov. 2021
Once a year, cinema and film industry elite flock to Los Cabos, Mexico for the annual Los Cabos International Film Festival. Held every November, this celebration seeks to promote dialogue and cultural exchange of the North American film industry. For five days, Los Cabos transforms into a hub for the cinema arts and welcomes people from all over the world to experience the magic of the movie theatre alongside directors, actors, industry professionals and thousands of other film lovers.
The festival was established in 2012 by a group of Mexican and American film directors, producers and distributors, including brothers Sean and Scott Cross. Their goal was to create a festival which celebrates all of North American film, while offering targeted support and dedication to the development of local Mexican filmmakers. These global and local initiatives have been attracting some of Hollywood’s best since the inception of the festival. It’s recognized that this is an environment where the arts can truly come alive. After the birth of the event, the festival quickly rose in importance and size. This is no surprise considering Los Cabos is a familiar playground for Hollywood movie makers.
The main program of the festival consists of two competitive sections: The Competencia Los Cabos section is for submissions from Canada, USA and Mexico. Nine films are chosen for this section, and each film is screened for audiences and industry alike. The second section is the Mexico Primero, which is reserved for Mexican films. The focus here is turned towards the countries top filmmakers and honours their skills and storytelling abilities, with six films competing for the prize. More often than not, the world premier of Mexican and even some international films happen here. In addition to these main categories, there are numerous other awards for filmmakers to take home, including an audience choice prize which attendees can vote on. The schedule of screenings and awards is jam-packed for all five days, with over $350,000 USD awarded in prizes.

Sabor a Cabo International Food & Wine Festival
The Sabor a Cabo Festival is the region’s largest culinary festival. It was started in 2005 by a group of local chefs who wanted the celebrate the unique restaurant scene found in Los Cabos. They also wanted to support and give back to their communities by committing contributions to local social initiatives and charities. Since its inauguration, proceeds from ticket sales have gone to the Cuerpo de Bomberos de Cabo San Lucas (volunteer firefighters), the Los Cabos Red Cross and the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. The festival is held every year in late November and early December across many different venues, which rotate from year to year. The festival actually consists of several events, and spans just over a week. The main night that kicks off the festival is called the Sabor a Cabo Magno Event. This night is often held on a luxury golf course or some other stunning seaside site. This is a fun event where you’ll try foods and drinks from over 60 restaurants and 40 wineries. There are mixologists there too, so don’t forget to sip some mezcal and tequila.
You’ll be mingling with friends, foodies, and culinarians while you dig in to some gourmet dishes as the sun sets on the ocean. In addition to amazing food, there’s great entertainment. Past musical guests included Grammy winner Lila Downs, the all-time best-selling Latin American rock band Man¡, and R&B legends Earth, Wind & Fire. You’ll also be treated to live cooking demonstrations with international chefs. Perhaps the most exciting element of the evening, aside from the good eats, is the Chef Con Sabor A Cabo. In this competition, attendees will be able to vote in various categories such as best red wine, best sweet dish, and others. In another exciting competition, 10 spots are available for restaurants to enter with an international chef they have invited. In this live cooking competition, they must prepare a gourmet dish to blow all the others out of the water. The action is shown on big screens so you can watch the meticulous detail and care each chef puts into their craft. The dishes will then be judged by the Sabor a Cabo by American Express Committee. Only one can win the prize!
The big night doesn’t put an end to the festival, however. Next comes the Sabor a Cabo Gastronomic Week, where participating restaurants all over Cabo prepare exclusive meals and dining experiences for festival attendees. Over 60 restaurants participate, so this is your chance to try the best of what Los Cabos has to offer. There are also smaller events happening all around town. These aren’t the same every year, so be sure to check the program, but in the past we’ve seen some really cool mini-festivals. Attendees loved Oktoberfest and Los Cabos BeerFest! The most popular of all mini-fests is the Cabo a Sabor Rural Festival, usually held at the end of the Gastronomic week. Its attendees travel to a nearby rural area to get a real taste of traditional Mexican cooking. Participating restaurants, usually around 20, prepare dishes made with organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and other locally sourced ingredients. To make it even more authentic, restaurants must produce their own eggs and honey for the dishes they make. This amazing farm-to-table event will show you just how mouthwatering farm to table cuisine can be. Ready to go? You can get tickets at the Cabo A Sabor website. Seats start at $325 USD and proceeds go to charity so you’ll be enjoying gourmet Mexican cuisine while supporting local initiatives.
Other Los Cabos Festivals
Sabores de Baja Festival in Miraflores
The small town of Miraflores is mostly known as the main organic farming community in the Los Cabos area. The best restaurants get their produce from here, so what better than a food festival right at the source? They also celebrate pitahayas, the favourite local fruit of the Miraflores indigenous community. This young festival usually happens in April. The focus here is traditional cuisine and organic farming. It’s small and less glitzy than some of the bigger festivals, but that’s exactly why it’s so charming. This colorful festival offers an authentic experience that will stay in your heart long after you leave. You can get tickets and more information here.
Gastrovino Baja Food & Wine Festival
This festival is the second largest in Los Cabos. Since 2012, the event has been held in the town of Todos Santos, which holds the title of Pueblo Magico (Magic Village). This moniker was given to around 100 small and overlooked towns across Mexico by the Tourism Board to let tourists know where something really special can be found. There are colorful flags, hidden artisanal shops and quaint cobblestone roads that give Todos Santos a magical feel. It’s the perfect place for a food festival. This weekend-long event was created by the owner of a local wine and olive oil shop. Indulge in local wines, imported cheese, and authentic Mexican dishes. The main event happens in the town square on Sunday, where guests can enjoy live music and a silent auction to benefit local programs for children. Visit the Gastrovino Baja Food & Wine Festival site for tickets and more information about this exciting program.
You won’t run out of things to try at any of these festivals, but we’ve got a few suggestions for mouthwatering meals you should keep an eye out for. You simply can’t leave before trying these dishes. And while you’re checking out the different tables and chefs at the festivals, make sure to sample what these top 10 restaurants in Los Cabos have to offer. The Most Exclusive Homes in Los Cabos: What You Need to Know
Have you ever wondered how Los Cabos became the premiere spot in Mexico for luxury and glamour? Who put Los Cabos on the map? And why do people love vacationing in these communities? We’ll tell you everything there is to know, from the groundbreaking and historical developments that have occurred in Los Cabos to the amazing lifestyle residents and guests can enjoy in the two original communities that started it all.
The History:
In the early 1950’s, a man named Don Abelardo Rodriguez Jr. came to Baja California Sur. Rodriguez was the son of the interim President of Mexico, General Abelardo Rodriguez, and had wealth and freedom to travel. A few years earlier, in 1948, Abelardo and his wife Lucille Bremer opened a luxury resort in Los Cruces. When he arrived in Los Cabos, meaning The Capes, he found a mostly uninhabited area with some fishing and hunting lodges. Rodriguez recognized the coast’s unique beauty and realized he could make something special there too. In 1957, the husband-and-wife team built the Hotel Palmilla on the undeveloped shore of the Sea of Cortez. It’s known today as the monumental One&Only Palmilla. But back then, it was a small 15-room resort that guests could only access by private plane or yacht. Luckily, that was no problem for the kind of people who frequented the resort. Lucille Bremer was a Hollywood movie star, and usually had the company of her counterparts at the Palmilla. Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, John Wayne and even President Eisenhower were among the guests who stayed at the Palmilla in its early days. Word soon got out and other exclusive resorts and hotels opened in Los Cabos, catering to the glamorous lifestyle of the Hollywood elite. Guests like Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger and Elton John made Los Cabos their private playground in the 60’s and 70’s.
Then, in 1994 two Houston-based friends and business associates were visiting, and like Rodriguez, they saw the potential for something really special on the undeveloped mountainsides close to the Palmilla Hotel. They had come to play at the new Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and couldn’t help but notice the pristine ocean fronts that had gone untouched until then. The two friends were visionaries and successful developers, so they bought a small portion of land on the oceanfront near the Palmilla. They set about developing five houses, all of which sold before completion. They decided to call their project, the first luxury community in Los Cabos, Villas Del Mar. They realized the potential of Villas Del Mar and continued to expand. The community was renowned for excellence in design, quality of life and top-tier management and services. Villas Del Mar set the standard for high-end resort communities. Not long after, Del Mar Development created a second community called Espiritu. But Del Mar Development didn’t stop there. They’ve continued the legacy that Don Abelardo Rodriguez jr. and Lucille Bremer started all those years ago by expanding the mountainside in to six communities, with another in development. The beauty of Los Cabos has been made available to people from all over the world. Thanks to these trailblazers, we can experience the pristine landscapes, the living sea and the warmth of the Mexican sun that is only found in Los Cabos. Let’s dive a little deeper into the way of life in two of the original Los Cabos communities, Villas Del Mar and Espiritu.
Villas Del Mar and Espiritu
The Activities
With all available activities, residents and guests staying in Espiritu and Villas Del Mar are never bored. The two communities neighbor each other, so they share many of the same exciting options. For off-site excursions, you can enjoy access to the Elegant Mexico Activity Concierge. Guests and residents can walk over to the One&Only Palmilla to enjoy the hotel amenities like first class spa treatments, exclusive fine dining and bars and cocktail lounges. You’ll have five restaurants to choose from.
We love SEARED, the gourmet steak house serving Wagyu A5 and certified Kobe beef, and Suviche which serves sushi and ceviche. Both were brought to Los Cabos by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Residents and visitors of the communities will be only a short walk away from culinary heaven. Also included is access to the the 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Palmilla golf course, an amazing private beach club, state of the art medical and fitness facilities, yoga and wellness meets at the hilltop sanctuary Mirador de la Cruz, and undisturbed beach access where you’ll find the most swimmable beach in all of Los Cabos.
The Community
The residents of Espiritu and Villas Del Mar form a community of happy, relaxed,like-minded people. With so many coming to live their best lives, it’s no wonder that they’ve made one of the most pleasant places to live in all of Mexico. Everything is only a stroll or cart-ride away, and cars are seen as an occasional tool rather than a necessity. The communities are staffed by over 200 people, and everyone is treated like family. Guests and residents enjoy a rich social network, complete with community events and shared cultural experiences. Homeowners build privileged connections with each other, as well as long lasting friendships with guests who keep coming back year after year. Espiritu has 28 acres of community parks, gardens and open spaces. There is also a tennis court and sports playing fields where community members regularly meet for social games. Many of these facilities have play areas for the little ones, and green spaces for joggers and dog walkers. Everytime you leave your villa, you’ll meet a friend. The communities are also extremely safe. Leaving doors unlocked is the norm there, and residents are beyond respectful to each other. Del Mar Developments have blended privacy and sociability perfectly, so when you want anonymity, you’ll have no trouble finding it. Whether you’re looking for high-class social functions or undisturbed relaxation, life here means a community connection beyond compare.
Del Mar: The resort homes that started it all
Villas Del Mar is recognized worldwide for setting the bar in luxury resort home design. And it was set high! Its homes are known for their alluring architecture. Some of the older beachfront homes feature a timeless design, while the newer penthouse homes blend contemporary design with traditional Mexican decor. All houses have a unified theme, without any two looking the same. Two decades after Villas Del Mar was founded, it continues to innovate with remodels and new additions. The homes feature an emphasis on outdoor living, the best part of Los Cabos life, with wide windows and glass doors to let the Mexican sun fill the rooms. Pool decks are larger-than-life, and the outdoor dining and lounging areas look out off the mountainside and onto the ocean. There are homes sized to accommodate all kinds of groups, from couples to multi-generational families. Some of the homes even have detached casitas for additional guests.
Espiritu: The most exclusive resort homes in Los Cabos
All of the homes in Espiritu were built by a team of experienced engineers and designers working with Del Mar Development. Del Mar Development had invaluable experience going into this project, having already built the successful Villas Del Mar. At Espiritu, you’ll find homes of extremely high quality with stunning outdoor living spaces. Large pools and decks, lush plant life and BBQ and lounge areas are the norm. Many newer communities in Los Cabos were built quickly and shoddily, attempting to capitalize on the real estate opportunity that the two original communities initiated. But at Espiritu, homeowners know their properties are top-notch. They experience luxury everyday! Espiritu also offers interior design services and has a full service onsite Design Center. Owners can make use of these services, ensuring that their homes are beautiful beyond compare for their own pleasure and for their guests’ as well. Ladco Resort Design, a nationally known Houston design group, provides expert consultation and furnishing. They cater to individual tastes, so no home in Espiritu is the same as another.

But since it’s only a 30-minute drive away, why not visit there for some amazing nightlife as well? Back in San Jose Del Cabo, go on an Art Walk in the artists district or a sightseeing tour to discover the heritage of the area.

The Best Baja California Sur Hot Springs Excursion
We love a good day at the spa. Few things in life can compare to a body wrap, a salt scrub and some serene moments in the sauna. There are some absolutely amazing spas in Los Cabos as well. But every now and then, when you want to get away from it all, you really want to get away from it all. Man-made hot tubs and modern massage therapy just don’t cut it. You need to experience the natural pampering and soothing sensations that only Mother Nature can provide. And what better place to do that than a natural Los Cabos hot spring?
What are Hot Springs?
Credits: allmexico365 The Baja California Sur region, where Los Cabos is located, is sprinkled with hot springs situated in beautiful scenic landscapes. Thousands of years ago, seismic activity and volcanic eruptions formed Baja California. The result is the rocky, rugged coastline that everyone loves. It made unparalleled underwater environments and some of the most unique beachscapes in the world. Fortunately, there’s a little bit of that volcanic activity still going on. Divine geysers and springs of hot water bubble up from the earth to fill pools and ponds, making natural hot tubs that you can visit and relax in.
Locals and indigineous communities have known about these thermal pools for generations. In the past, citizens of Baja California Sur have harnessed these waters and built their homes around them. In 1940, Governor Augustin Olachea piped water from a thermal spring right into his home, creating his own private spa The major portion of natural, undeveloped land in the Baja California Sur area is called the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere. This region is technically a reserve and is protected by the Mexican Government. The reserve is open to visitors, but some areas are protected from potentially harmful human activities. Because of that, many of the hot springs in the area are inaccessible. But not to worry, there are some breathtaking springs that you can visit while respecting and supporting the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere.
The best Hot Springs experiences in Baja California Sur
El Chorro Hot Spring
credits: hereuntilthere The first stop on your Baja California Sur hot spring excursion is located in the small town of Santiago. This rural village has remained unchanged and has a lot of history. There are actually several hot springs in the area, and this one is the easiest to find. At El Chorro Hot Springs, you’ll be asked to pay a small entrance fee by a member of the Biosphere preservation team. The guard will help you park, and you can pay extra to camp overnight. Be sure to bring water, and pack food if you’re camping. The El Chorro Hot spring is a calm place located at the base of the Agua Caliente Canyon. The water comes down the canyon into a scenic pool. The water near the dam is warm, but the best spots are closer to the canyon wall.
Step into this thermal spring and you’ll feel a wave of healing energy pass through you. The water is soft and enhanced by minerals, which feels much different than your average chlorinated hot tub. Weekends tend to be busier, so go during the week. Getting There: Head north from Los Cabos on Highway #1 and drive past the Los Cabos International Airport. Follow the signs to Santiago. Once there, take a stop at the Santiago Zoo if you like, and then continue down the dirt road to the left until you reach the small village of Agua Caliente. Signs will point you to the El Chorro Hot Spring. This trip takes about one hour and twenty minutes.
Santa Rita Hot Spring
credits: martymagic The Santa Rita Hot Spring is close to the El Chorro Hot Spring, but you’ll want to get back in your car and drive back into town. You’ll take a different route, but ultimately end up at another stunning hot spring where you can soak your cares away while taking in the beauty of the Mexican mountains. There are little fish who will nibble away at your dry skin if you sit still enough. This hot spring is smaller than El Chorro, but also less visited. If you’re going on a weekday, you might be the only ones there to enjoy the tranquility. There’s a small entrance fee, once again to contribute to the conservation of the area. After you park, you’ll need to climb over some medium sized rocks before setting your eyes on the beauty of the Santa Rita Hot Spring. Getting there: Drive back to Agua Caliente and look for a sign on your left for San Jorge. It’s about 15 minutes away. You’ll drive up a hill until a left hand turn, which will take you to the hot spring.
San Jorge Hot Spring
The next hot spring near the town of Santiago is the San Jorge Hot Spring. This hot spring is the more elusive, but people who manage to find it are in for a treat. It features three small pools for you to recharge and relax in. The plant life around here is lush, so you’ll be in a tropical paradise while letting the mineral water purify your mind and body. Getting There: In the town of Santiago, take a right at the zoo instead. You’ll drive until you reach a small one-lane dirt road. At this point you’ll want to get out and walk, and this is where your hike begins. The path here is unmarked and some people can’t find the way. Your best bet is to hire a local guide to help you get there. Travel Tip: Ask your guide to take you to some other beautiful sights in the area. They’ll show you off-the-path hidden gems. The water isn’t warm, but if you want to cool down try the Cascada Sol Del Mayo Waterfall.
Natural Hot Springs of El Sargento
credits: quercusbaja The last hot spring on our list is probably its most unique experience. It might even be one of the strangest in the world! To find it, you’ll be traveling to a totally different area of Baja California Sur. Head north to the La Ventana/El Sargento shores. But don’t worry, it’s totally worth it to see this strange phenomenon that only occurs in a few places on earth. When you get to Hot Springs, the actual name of this beach, you’ll see what seems to be a regular beach. Look a little closer, and you’ll notice holes and displaced rocks spotting the shore. The hot springs here are actually hidden underneath the sands! Bring some small sand shovels and start digging. About 7 inches down you’ll start to feel hot water coming up from the ground. Do like the locals do and make yourself your own private hot tub. You can hop back and forth from the cool ocean waters and your personal hot spring. The best time to go is around noon on a weekday, when both crowds and tides are low. This is a two hour drive from Los Cabos, but it’s well worth it. La Ventana is actually a haven for water sports and adventure lovers, so you’ll definitely want to get up to some other activities while you’re there. It’s a perfect day trip. Getting There: Drive up Highway #1 for about an hour and a half, through San Bartolo and San Antonio. When you start seeing signs for La Ventana/El Sargento, look for a paved road on the right. Take this road and follow the signs to the beach town. This trip takes two and a half hours.
If you’re looking for other unique outdoor experiences, we’ve got an exciting itinerary of nature-based activities to help you plan your next trip. And if the hot springs have inspired you to explore the rest of the waters in Baja California Sur, learn more about the surrounding Sea of Cortez. When you’re ready to escape and experience some of the best natural spas the earth has to offer, make your way to Los Cabos. All these hot springs will be just a short drive away. When you stay with Elegant Mexico, you’ll have a luxury villa that you can come back to after your days of adventure. Enjoy exclusive resort treatment in complete privacy with yourself and your company. Book an exclusive Los Cabos vacation home for your next vacation in paradise.

Take Art Walks & See Christmas Decorations
The best description of the Los Cabos’ art walk on Tripadvisor has to be “The Grown-up side of Cabo”. Taking place every Thursday, the art walks are a favourite of first-time tourists, as well as returning art lovers. The cool December evenings make them even more rewarding, since you won’t feel the drain of walking or cycling. If you happen to visit close to Christmas, you may even get a chance to see some Christmas decorations, and mingle with the revelers in artsy downtown corners.
Go Running
While vacations are a time to indulge, and to let go of your routine, there are always opportunities for fitness lovers in Los Cabos. December often brings with it running events that offer a healthy way to explore a new city and socialize with fellow runners.

Held at the charmingly quaint town of Todos Santos, the concert series has a massive lineup of local and nationally touring artists. The event is hosted by rock band Cordovas and presents a unique opportunity to experience the local music scene. A fun fact: The route to Todos Santos has a peculiar pop-culture landmark in the form of ‘Hotel California’. The hotel surprisingly has nothing to do with the chartbuster by Eagles, but it’s visited by tourists nevertheless.

The Pirate History of Cabo
Cabo’s history is full of conquests and adventures, with a lasting legacy that goes back thousands of years. Because of its location, Cabo has always been an important landmark on the Pacific trade route. It’s interesting to note that the pirate history of Mexico itself may have begun with the first conquest by Hernán Cortés. An ambitious navigator and seasoned conquistador, Cortés set course for the Aztec empire or today’s Mexico by disobeying his immediate superior, the governor of Cuba. In other words, Cortés and his men went on a pirate inquisition which was later legitimised by the crown.
English and Dutch Privateers
After the fall of the Aztecs in the 16th century, Los Cabos became an important navigational landmark for the naval fleets. The ports in Cabo soon became a hub, brimming with exotic materials, such as silk, pearls and spices to be exchanged for Mexican silver, from Luzon in the Philippines to Acapulco. The unique topography of the peninsula, such as the arc of Los Cabos, referred by the locals as ‘el arco’, became a widely known sea mark – not only for trading ships, but also for pirates. Earliest known ‘pirates’ may have been English and Dutch privateers, who followed the example of Francis Drake, the first known privateer to cross the Magellan’s Strait to reach the Cabo bay. Today, you can only marvel and imagine what the busy Marina would have looked like back in the day. There’s a piece of history in every corner of Los Cabos.
Cavendish’s Lost Treasure of Los Cabos
As trade increased in the late 16th century, more English privateers flocked to Los Cabos, adding new chapters in the pirate legacy of Los Cabos. The most noteworthy pirate loot in the history of Los Cabos has to be the siege of Santa Anna, by Thomas Cavendish. The English privateer was infamous amongst Spanish trade ships and is widely reputed to be the first man to deliberately circumnavigate the Earth. His exploits eventually earned him the knighthood and enormous wealth, a large part of which can be traced to the sinking of Santa Anna in Los Cabos.
Santa Anna was a gigantic galeon by mid-16th century standards. At 600 ton, it was loaded with a cargo so massive that it had no space left for cannons, making it an easy target for Cavendish and his merry band of pirates. Cavendish eventually divided the cargo between the two English ships, only one of which returned to England. The other ship named ‘Content’ never made it back, and has led to the rise of rumours about untold riches waiting at the depth of the sea of Cortez. While the veracity of Content’s myth is dubious, shipwreck scuba diving is a must-do activity on your trip to Los Cabos. There are many tours that operate in and around Cabo, and offer a fun experience for the entire family. Needless to say, the remote possibility of finding a long lost treasure can always make it worth your time.
End of Piracy and Modern Day Attractions of Cabo
Piracy continued unimpeded for centuries until navies of European nations began to consider pirates as a serious threat to the sovereign. After the end of the Mexican war, the American navy had become strong enough to eliminate any pirates, and most of them either fled the continent or went underground. By the 19th century, steam-propulsion ships became the norm, ending the classic age of pirates in Cabo and the Caribbean.
Today, the coves and caves around the coast of Cabo, that once provided a cover for pirates, are popular tourist destinations. You can see some of them if you choose to cruise around the cost. Some of the structures and lasting legacy of this era is still within your reach. For example, the famous arch of Los Cabos is just minutes away from the Marina, making for a great outdoor location. While the arch may have indeed been part of the pirate era, it predates known history, and even the Sea of Cortés, by a wide margin. Today, this unique location has been converted into a whale-watching and snorkelling destination.
If you prefer to go on a different kind of an adventure, the Buccaneer Queen is another modern day pirate experience, right at the Marina. This authentic pirate-style ship has everything you need to set off on a conquest, including a bar, glass bottom tours, and a sunset cruise. The cruise on the coast of Cabo is the closest you can come to reliving a bygone era.
The Aztecs, Spanish and later on the English and Dutch privateers have all left an imprint on Cabo, creating a potent mix of culture and adventure. From natural landmarks, to pirate-themed restaurants, and cruises, Cabo has everything for both thrill-seekers and history buffs. The best part? Los Cabos has perfect weather all year around for sightseeing, or for water sports. If you are planning a trip in the near future, here’s what you need to know about the most exclusive stay options in Los Cabos. Why Todos Santos Road Trip Must be on Your Cabo Bucket List
While the world around is in a constant state of change, one thing that never changes is the open road. As Jack Kerouac would put it, “Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.” if you also feel the need to hit on the gas and experience a whole new, surreal world, a road trip to Todos Santos is the place to be. Beaches, deserts, mountains: the road opens many possibilities as you hit the gas and storm on the Todos Santos highway. Need help planning this road trip? This itinerary and recommendations can serve you well.
Todos Santos Roadtrip has it all
When planning your trip to Los Cabos, or anywhere in Baja peninsula, it’s important to consider the season and the weather. The rainy months of August and September can be problematic, limiting the number of things you can do on the way. Winter months are great not only for the pleasure of driving, but also for the availability of unique experiences. Once you’ve checked the forecast, it’s time to plot the route for your trip. Los Cabos is an obvious starting point for many reasons.
Start from San Jose Del Cabo
Los Cabos International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in Mexico, and a natural choice to land in Baja. Although Cabo San Lucas also has some options for car rentals, renting at the SJD airport can be more convenient, especially for those in the luxury segment. You can book both car rentals and stay options through Elegant Mexico and focus on planning the trip. Once you pick your ride, you can start your road trip to Todos Santos right away, although Los Cabos itself has a lot to offer.
Experience Luxury in Cabo San Lucas
When you indulge in Cabo’s opulent luxury, it will be tempting to abandon all plans of exploring elsewhere. With its beach clubs, exclusive rejuvenation spas, and private pools, Cabo San Lucas is the ultimate leisure destination.
A quiet evening at the Marina, visiting the iconic Arc and playing golf before you hit the road to Todos Santos is highly recommended. If you are planning a longer vacation, you can also explore the vibrant galleries and local culture. The festive months of December and January offer a delightful immersion in the Baja lifestyle.
Although one can never get tired of Cabo San Lucas, a greater adventure awaits on your road trip. Migriño can help you kickoff your road trip in a thrilling fashion.
Try Adventure Sports in Migriño
A one-hour drive away from Cabo San Lucas, Migriño is perfect for a wide range of beach activities. If you’re an equestrian enthusiast, Pacific horseback riding is a must-do activity here. It’s best to start early from Cabo San Lucas, especially if you’re travelling after the winter months. Even in February, Migriño can get progressively hotter during the day. However, all the heat is worth it for this once-in-a-lifetime experience and for that perfect profile picture. Of course, there is also a lot to interest the die-hard thrill seekers, and those waiting for an adventure in the Mexican desert. Migriño is well-known for ATV rides in the desert with the option to ride by yourself or with your special someone.
After an adventure-filled morning, it’s time to slow down: and the next destination on the Todos Santos route is perfect for that.
Indulge in arts and surfing at El Pescadero
While Migriño offer you the thrills, El Pescadero – just about 40 minutes on Highway 19 – is an art lover’s paradise. With its quaint charm and artistic vibes, this sleepy town can be the perfect spot for a mid-day meal en route to Todos Santos.
There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to restaurants in El Pescadero. If you want to try authentic Mexican cuisine, Hierbabuena is top rated, recommended for its farm-to-table style experience. Another great option is the artisanal cuisine at TV Chef Carlito’s restaurant, aptly named as Carlito’s Place. El Pescadaro is not short on international cuisine, and everything from sushi to Italian restaurants is a quick Google search away.
If you want to get back on the action after a hearty meal, you can head to Cerritos, the best surfing spot in Baja. Although it’s a slight detour, surfing options here go from beginner to advanced levels, making it worth your time, especially if you are traveling with kids. Needless to say, the scenic Pacific sunsets offer a romantic setting for a quiet walk on the beach. However, if you prefer some retail therapy to surfing, or are short on time, you can head to LOVEleigh designs instead. This bohemian art shop is a surefire way to stumble upon a rare antique or two. After an eventful day, you can finally make your way to the famed Todos Santos, possibly the end point of your road trip.
Explore all the things to do in Todos Santos
True to its name Todos Santos, meaning ‘All Saints’ in Spanish, is almost a spiritual experience. Away from the sprawling grandness of Cabo San Lucas, this natural oasis is usually the high note in your Baja adventure. While you’re almost at the fag end of your Todos Santos road trip, this laid back town has a lot to offer before you head back home.
Popular culture has a funny way to unravel. Nothing demonstrates this as the mandatory pilgrimage to the ‘Hotel California’. While almost everyone knows that this hotel has no connection with the Eagles, it did win a lawsuit against the band, ironically linking it to the famous hit single. Right in the middle of Todos Santos, the venue has stayed true to its musical legacy, and is now a popular destination to live music events such as the Tropic of Cancer concert series.
If you’re more interested in offbeat, authentic experiences, Todos Santos can still surprise you with the rich diversity of activities it offers. A visit to the turtle hatcheries, or learning about the native inhabitants of the land at the Cultural Center, are all on the cards. For those ready to head back to the delights of Cabo, ending the trip right at this point will still be a memorable experience. However, if you crave for more time on the road, you can try more destinations down the road from Todos Santos, or even continue to the East Coast to come full circle to Los Cabos.
Great Day trips and detours from Todos Santos
Hike to Picacho de la Laguna
“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson For most travellers, a road trip is an intimate self-exploration, and a hike right to the heart of Baja is the best way to elevate this experience. The most popular one near Todos Santos takes you to a meadow with incredible views of the Sierras. If you’re unsure about hiking by yourself, you can always go with guides who offer day trips and multi-day hikes, most starting at the La Burrera ranch.
If you prefer something a little less daunting, you can continue on the Highway 19, all the way to the capital city of La Paz.
Spirit away to serene La Paz
While the beaches of Todos Santos are renowned for surfing and other beach activities, the shoreline of La Paz offers solace and contentment. The crystal blue waters of Enseñada Grande that make boats seem like they’re flying on air, and Playa Balandra’s shallow, playful allure pulls in the whole family together. While Los Cabos has a lot more activities, places to visit and nightlife, La Paz is perfect for a quiet evening and intimate escapes. Like almost every other place in Baja, La Paz also offers opportunities to deepen your relationship with the ocean – at times literally, if you are into diving or snorkelling. Snorkelling in La Paz is a must-do activity, the kind that inspired John Steinback’s first novel, based right here. It’s also one of the rare locations to see the whale sharks up close in their natural habitat.
In many ways La Paz can be a fitting finale to an amazing road trip adventure starting from Los Cabos, along the picturesque Highway 19. From luxurious indulgences to desert adventures, hikes and a rendezvous with the heart of Baja, it can be the vacation you have always dreamed of. And yet, if you need more, this sunkissed tropical wonderland can offer it to you. The only way to top the road trip to Todos Santos and La Paz is to complete the full circle and come back to Los Cabos from the East Coast, along the Camino Cabo Este.
Exploring more of Baja from Todos Santos
While the easiest way to complete the road trip from La Paz is to take Highway 1, and then 19, straight back to Cabo San Lucas, you do have an option to explore the East Coast if you want to see the hidden side of Baja. The East Coast is home to hidden wonders that you won’t regret visiting. There’s the twin towns of El Triunfo & San Antonio, with their history of mining and a unique cactus sanctuary, a visit to which can offer bragging rights and some very Instagram-worthy photos. If by some strange series of events you have managed to stay dry in Baja, fishing in Los Barriles and cliff jumping in Canon de La Zorra, near Santiago, can be thrilling and fun-filled experiences to take home with you. If you continue on Camino Cabo Este, you can also get an opportunity to explore the only coral reef in the Pacific, near Cabo Pulmo.
Each destination on Baja California’s circuit offers a chance to tell a story. Each one of them opens a door into a new world of luxury and culture, helping you learn something new about yourself. By the time you return your car at the airport, you may just find yourself a bit heavier on the feet.

Art & Culture of Los Cabos
Cabo is art produced by the greatest artist ever – nature. But it’s not just the views. The cultural vibe and the rich history of Los Cabos can inspire storytellers, musicians, and travelers. Here’s why an artist will always feel at home in Cabo.
What Artists Like Steinbeck and Hemingway Liked About Cabo
Los Cabos has always been an artist’s favored destination, from yesteryear literary giants like Steinbeck and Hemingway to modern-day superstars like Jennifer Aniston. You never know who you might bump into in Los Cabos. There are many reasons why artists have loved Los Cabos since the late 1950s.Perhaps it’s the laid back charm of Cabo or the exotic nostalgia of a long-gone era, or maybe it’s just the much-deserved relaxation that puts an artist’s imagination to work. John Steinbeck’s legendary coastal journey from Baja is a much-needed primer for any artist to consider visiting this tropical wonder. Steinbeck describes Cabo as a romantic land where stories of pirates and maidens come alive. While the mystical past influenced Steinbeck, Hemingway was taken by the fishing opportunities here. Can there be a better recommendation of fishing in Los Cabos? An exploration through the cerulean sea of Cortez loved by both Steinbeck and Hemmingway, is sure to inspire your next masterpiece.
A Rich History and Indigenous Culture
Art in Cabo San Lucas can take many forms. The influence from the indigenous culture, hundreds of years of pirate rule, frequent campaigns from the British and Dutch conquistadors: each moment in its history is enough for a lifetime of inspiration.A trip to Cabo San Lucas can present opportunities to learn about this unique history in the Natural History Museum, while the 18th-century architecture of old Cabo allows you to trace your fingers literally on its rich heritage. If you need something more slice-of-life, day trips to the historic mining towns of El Triunfo and San Antonio can let you take a glimpse into the life and times of miners living there in the 20th century. The history of Los Cabos also leaves a lot of blank spaces that need an artist’s interpretation. For example, the Pericúes were the first inhabitants of this land, but very little is known about where they came from, and how.
Art Walks, Galleries and Visual Spectacles in Cabo
If you prefer something more contemporary to inspire your creative side, Los Cabos can be surprisingly eclectic. Every year from November to June, each Thursday night presents a unique opportunity to San Jose Del Cabo artists. The streets in the gallery district of San Jose Del Cabo become doors and windows to the many art galleries of Cabo. As many as 12 local galleries participate in the art walk, making it a quintessential art experience at Los Cabos. However, one doesn’t always need to go on an art walk to stumble upon art in Baja. Especially in Cabo San Lucas, contemporary architecture can be breathtakingly appealing. A couple of hours away, the capital city of La Paz is also known for its award-winning modern architecture. Projects from Cabo San Lucas and La Paz are shortlisted in global contemporary architecture awards. And closer to the Los Cabos corridor, it takes no architect or art expert to take in the sheer luxury and grandeur offered by resorts such as the One & Only Palmilla. The entire stretch from San Jose Del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas is full of leisure landmarks, including golf courses and fine restaurants. It’s the perfect setting for fresh new ideas in any art form that you practice.
Natural Wonders of Los Cabos
The famous explorer and inventor of the diving equipment Jacques Cousteau called Cabo ‘The World’s Aquarium’ for its rich diversity of marine life. A cornucopia of oceanic experiences await travelers who take to the beaches and bays of Los Cabos. Inspiration can strike you while enjoying the magnificent natural wonder, seeing the only coral reef in the Pacifics, snorkeling near the shark whales, or even while having the near-meditative experience of whale watching. If the sea is not your closest friend, perhaps you will find your calling by hiking to the sierras or trying your hand at horseback or ATV riding. For painters and filmmakers, the arch of Cabo San Lucas is a definitive landmark to weave their craft around. If you do consider nature to be one of the finest artists, Los Cabos surely is one of her masterpieces.
Live Music & Nightlife of Cabo
The bustling nightlife of Cabo is a great escape from the mundane and offers creative minds unique opportunities to socialize. The International Film Festival happens every year in November and is considered as the hallmark of great filmmaking across Mexico, the United States and Canada. Los Cabos is also a treat for the music aficionados, with live local music throughout the year and international events, such as the Jazz weekend in San Jose Del Cabo. If art is an endeavor to find meaning or inspiration, Los Cabos is surely a paradise with an endless supply of dreams and life. Plan your artistic journey today, by exploring these amazing stay options with a story to tell.

Visit Los Cabos When the Weather is Just Right
If your New Year’s resolution is to have new experiences, get more active, and eat better, there can’t be a better place to visit than Los Cabos. Pristine beaches, crystal blue oceans brimming with exotic marine life, and a unique cultural extravaganza tempered in local flavors await anyone who visits Los Cabos all year round. However, spending a week in Cabo is especially great to recover from January blues. Our Cabo loine-up includes the best things to do, and events to help you get started with planning your first tropical vacation of the year.
While most of North America is still covered in snow, the tropical weather of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo can be a pleasant way to ease into spring. Average February and March temperatures at Los Cabos range between pleasantly cool evenings (16ºC, or 60ºF) and blissfully warm in the day time (25ºC, or 77ºF). This means you can go for any water sport you can dream of during the day, and spend relaxing evenings by the poolside without thinking twice.
Unlike the boisterous holiday season, in which Los Cabos restaurants and main attractions are usually packed, the spring experience brings relatively lesser tourist footfall. Interestingly, most tourist attractions are still in full swing by this time, which makes it the ideal season to catch wonders such as the annual whale migration. And if you’re searching for unique local events and activities in your vacation, there’s no shortage of that either.
Sun, Fun and a Half Marathon
Although a vacation to Mexico is full of opulent indulgences, there are always opportunities to keep up with your fitness routines. Los Cabos Half Marathon is a unique and healthy experience and usually happens in February. The event’s scenic route includes San Jose Del Cabo’s historical downtown and an astonishing view of Puerto Los Cabos Marina. Not up for 21 K? You can still take part in the event by signing up for a shorter distance. And if you need a little post-run relaxation, Los Cabos has many beach clubs and spas to rejuvenate your spirits.
Jazz up the Valentine’s Day weekend
If you have been wondering about perfect ways to spend Valentine’s Day, a magical weekend full of music and culture awaits you in San Jose Del Cabo. The annual Jazz Weekend usually takes place in February and is a magnet for audiophiles, especially jazz lovers. The best part is that the event has free access, and is headlined by some of the most talented artists across the globe. Luxurious stay options in Los Cabos can make this romantic escapade even more special for your loved ones.
Taste Cabo’s Premium Cocktails
There’s a lot to Los Cabos than just partying and drinks, but if that’s your idea of fun vacation, head to the annual Cabo Cocktails Festival that usually happens in February. It’s the premium mixology festival in Los Cabos and is hosted across many locations, including San Jose Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
This four-day festival is a great way to attend seminars from the world’s leading bartenders, or just to join in the fun with opening and closing parties. The best bars and drinking destinations in Los Cabos take part in the festival, which makes it the easiest way to get the best cocktails in the region.
Apart from these, there are plenty of interesting Los Cabos events coming up in February, such as the Cabo San Lucas Pet festival. Hosted in Feb, the festival celebrates pets with a unique parade and workshops with professional dog trainers.
Hang Out with Great EDM Artists
Your Los Cabos vacation can be everything you dreamed of if you groove to the tunes of world’s biggest EDM artists. The Omnia dayclub in Los Cabos is the ultimate spring break destination, with an impressive lineup of performers for the entire month. If you’re planning your Cabo vacation for the first weekend of March, you could get a chance to be a part of Omnia’s anniversary celebrations. It may include some of the world’s top electronic acts, such as Mark Eteson, Cuswell and the Dutch legend Tiësto.
Festivals in Todos Santos
A vacation to Los Cabos can be a perfect blend of quaint and opulent, with eclectic options that await you in the town of Todos Santos. About an hour’s drive away from Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos is a must-do road trip all year round for many reasons. In March, the town hosts an annual art event that includes the best of local musicians and street artists. With a magnificent lineup, including a handicraft sale and performing arts events, this is a must-do travel experience in your trip to Los Cabos. The Todos Santos Film Festival follows right after the arts festival and brings the best of Latin films collection as a way to celebrate Mexican filmmakers.
Organic Delights at Sabore de Baja
You wouldn’t call this a “vacation” if it didn’t include some culinary delights, would you? Baja food is nourishment not just for the body, but also for the soul. You can indulge in the best of local cuisine at Sabore de Baja, a one-of-a-kind organic food festival held on the cusp of spring. Organized to celebrate the seasonal local produce, as well as the traditional way of cooking unique to the landscape, this festival is a great way to take a bit of Baja back with you in the form of unforgettable gastronomical memories.
Other fun things to do in Cabo
Even if you don’t plan on attending any events, and just look forward to a relaxing break, there’s no place like Los Cabos. Its serene locale, combined with luxurious services at spas such as One & Only Palmilla, make it a dream destination for your perfect vacation. Of course, there’s always enough motivation to go outdoors with a long list of things to do in Los Cabos.
Go whale watching or deep-sea diving
Los Cabos has a deep, almost spiritual connection with the ocean. Whether it’s exploring the many sandy beaches on the Baja shoreline, or exploring the coral reef on the east coast, the oceanic experience of Cabo is unmatched. Named as a UNESCO world heritage site, the Cabo Pulmo reefs are a bright success story of how climate changes can be reversed. The azure waters of the reef brimming with a rich diversity of marine life are a treat for nature lovers and divers alike. If you would rather stay above the surface and inhale the fresh sea breeze, you can opt for whale watching instead. The annual migration of whales is a remarkable natural phenomenon that never gets tiring, especially if you’re traveling with your entire family.
